  1. List the steps involved in the performance of a basic facial.
  • Drape and engage in consultation
  • Perform skin analysis and make product selection
  • Place a towel or paper barrier between the client’s head and the headrest. Adjust the headrest and recline the hydraulic chair. Make sure the client is comfortable.
  • Protect the client’s hair with a towel or cap
  • Apply cleansing cream over the face, using stroking and rotary movements
  • Remove the cleansing cream with a warm, damp towel
  • Apply two or three steam towels to open pores and loosen imbedded dirt and oils
  • Reapply cleansing cream to the skin with the fingertips
  • Gently massage the face with the hands or a brush machine, using continuous and rhythmic movements
  • Wipe off excess cleansing cream with a warm towel
  • Apply an exfoliating product and lightly massage over the skin
  • Apply steam towel. Wipe off excess product until the skin is free of exfoliating residue
  • Gently wipe the selected tonic over the face and pat dry
  • Apply mask or pack and allow to dry
  • Apply tepid to warm towel to moisten mask or pack. Wipe off product until free of residue
  • Again, gently wipe toner or astringent over the face and pat dry
  • Apply a light coat of moisturizer using the effleurage movement
  • Apply a light dusting of talc if the client desires it. Remove any excess
  • Slowly raise the hydraulic chair and assist the client to a sitting position

  • Brush machines must always be thoroughly cleansed and disinfected between clients. Position brushes so they will not lose their shape while drying and then store in a closed container
  • When performing electrotherapy treatments, the barber and the client must avoid contact with metal or water
  • When using high-frequency current, never use a skin or scalp lotion that contains alcohol prior to the electrical treatment
  • Always check with your state regulatory agency about microdermabrasion rules in your state
  • The vibrator should never be used when there is a known weakness of the heart or in cases of fever, abscesses, or skin inflammations
  • Do not permit infrared rays to remain on the body tissues for more than a few seconds at a time. Move your hand back and forth across the rays’ path to break constant exposure on the client’s skin. The total exposure time should not exceed 5 minutes
  • Overexposure to ultraviolet rays can destroy skin tissue. Start with 2 or 3 minute exposure time and gradually increase to 7 or 8 minutes
  • Make sure to ask the client if they are sensitive to latex before using latex products
