Chapter 12 Review Questions

  1. Explain the purpose of draping a client. Draping protects the clients’ skin and clothing and assures clients that the barber is conscientious about their comfort and safety.
  2. Explain the purpose of the towel or neck strip in draping. The purpose of the towel or neck strip in draping is to prevent the cape from having direct contact with the client’s skin and to maintain sanitation standards. The application of this barrier between the client’s skin and the drape is a requirement of every state’s barber law, rules, and regulations.
  3. Describe the type of cape that should be used for wet and chemical services and why. Shampoo capes are typically waterproof drapes made of vinyl used to protect the client’s skin and clothing from water, liquids, and chemical processes.
  4. Describe the type of cape that is preferred for haircutting services and why. Haircutting capes are made of nylon or other synthetic materials, These draping fabrics are usually more comfortable for the client because they do not hold in as much heat as vinyl capes. From the barber’s standpoint, these fabrics are also more effective in shedding wet or dry hair. Wet hair has a tendency to stick to vinyl capes, making it more difficult to shake loose hairs off the drape.
  5. List the steps involved in performing a shampoo service.
  • Seat the client in a comfortable and relaxed position.
  • Drape the client according to textbook or instructor’s procedures
  • Consult with the client about products, hair and scalp problems, or any questions they have about their hair or scalp.
  • Examine the condition of the client’s hair and scalp to looseen epidermal scales, debris, and scalp tissues.
  • Decide on the type of products to be used.
  • Position the client for the shampoo service. Recline the client while draping the back of the cape over the back of the chair.
  • Wet the hair with warm water.
  • Apply shampoo to all parts of the scalp.
  • Massage the scalp for several minutes.
  • Blot the hair
  • Raise client to a sitting position and lightly towel dry the hair; wipe the face and ears if necessary.
  1. List and describe the massage manipulations applied to the scalp during shampoo.
  • Sliding Movement
  • Behind Ears and Neck-to-Crown Movement
  • Forehead-toCrown Movement
  • Front Hairline Movement
  • Ear-to-Crown Movement
  1. Compare the massage manipulations used in a shampoo service to the manipulations used in a scalp massage. The massage techniques used to perform scalp treatments may be more thorough, requiring additional steps and time. The manipulations should be performed with continuous, even motion and pressure.
  2. List the scalp treatments that use the ultraviolet rays and infrared rays.
  • Normal Scalp and Hair
  • Dry Scalp and Hair
  • Dandruff Scalp
  • Alopecia
  1. Identify three important cautions associated with scalp treatments.

  • Do not suggest scalp treatment id abrasions or lesions are present
  • Barbers should not treat scalp diseases caused by parasitic or staphylococcus infections
  • Never use a scalp or hair treatment product that contains alcohol before applying high-frequency current.
