The bottom end-cap of modern barber poles represents the basin that was used as a vessel to either catch the blood during bloodletting or to lather the face for shaving. The white stripes on the pole represent the bandages that were used to stop the bleeding and were hung on the staff to dry. The stained bandages would then twist around the pole in the breeze, forming a red-and-white pattern. One interpretation of the colors of the barber pole is that the red represented the blood, blue the veins, and white the bandages.
